APPLICATION OF THE W3C WEB OF THINGS STANDARD IN THE WUNSIEDEL HYDROGEN GENERATION PLANT

One of Germany's largest green hydrogen generation plants went on stream in Wunsiedel, Upper Franconia, on September 14, 2022.

A good year after the official groundbreaking ceremony, Bavaria’s Minister President Dr. Markus Söder, Siemens CEO Matthias Rebellius and Siemens Financial Services CEO Veronika Bienert handed over the plant to the operating company WUN H2.

The plant at the Wunsiedel Energy Park is connected to the cloud via the integration component sayWoT! and enables smart control by the user. This ensures green hydrogen production – that is, hydrogen generated from surplus electricity for storage.

To make connectivity as simple as possible, the open W3C Web of Things (WoT) standard was used, which allows the technical components to be connected to each other and used in the control logic with little effort.

The showcase project in Wunsiedel demonstrates how simple and fast connectivity can be implemented with the open standard WoT. In this way, WoT makes a significant contribution to the energy transition and thus to achieving the climate targets in Germany.

In the future, this solution will be used in other decentralized energy resources to monitor and control them intelligently.
